We are excited to be hiring a Charity Workers Branch (CWB) Organiser to join the IWGB. We encourage applications from anyone who is enthusiastic and wants to support precarious workers.
Who we are
The Independent Workers’ Union of Great Britain (IWGB) is a bold and dynamic union which consists of mainly low paid, migrant and/or precarious workers, such as outsourced cleaners and security guards, workers in the so-called “gig economy”, such as cycling instructors and Uber drivers, and foster care workers.
The role
The role is fixed term for 2 years for 28 hours per week with an annual salary of £27,209. There is a possibility of increasing the role to 35 hours and / or making the role permanent in the future, depending on branch circumstances.
The CWB was formed in January 2020 and has since grown to over 1200 members, working in many different sub-sectors, including mental health, refugees & migrants, environment and human rights. To date, we have had wins on pay and sick pay, contracts, redundancies, racial discrimination and more. We are excited for a new Organiser to join our team to support us to win more change in the sector.
You’ll be joining the branch at an exciting time of growth, with an enthusiastic and engaged membership. Your focus will be on building power in a number of priority workplaces, and developing and supporting active members who can organise and lead their own campaigns. We don’t simply want to win campaigns, but to organise and win in ways that enhance workers’ capacities for winning even more in the future.
You’ll be based in the organising team within the central IWGB union and will liaise closely with the CWB committee (the elected branch representatives). Occasional evening and weekend work may be needed, roughly one night a week and one weekend every three months.
We’re looking for someone with potential and motivation, so if you don’t have everything on the person specification, but share our values and believe you have what it takes, then please apply!
We particularly welcome applications from candidates from racially or ethnically minoritised backgrounds and other marginalised backgrounds.
This job description is an outline of the key tasks and responsibilities that the postholder is expected to deliver on and is not an exhaustive list. The job may change over time to reflect the changing needs of the Union as well as the personal development needs of the postholder.
In your application, please address how you meet the following criteria. You don’t need to address each and every point, but focus on those criteria that you do meet.

Who is the IWGB?
The IWGB was founded in 2012 by Latin American cleaners organising for better working conditions. Since then, we have grown to thousands of members across the country. From outsourced facilities staff to gig economy workers, IWGB members are key workers on the frontline of the fight against poverty pay and insecure work.
The IWGB organises couriers, cycling instructors, charity workers, yoga teachers, cleaners, security officers, video game workers, nannies, university workers, foster carers, private hire drivers and more.
As an organisation that fights for workers’ rights, we strongly believe no applicant or employee should face discrimination or harassment based on their gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, disability status, age, or marital/domestic partner status. You can read more in the IWGB Statement of Inclusivity. Please let us know if you have any requirements for interview.
Above all, we’re looking for someone with empathy and the determination to support workers who fight for better conditions.
We like to be open and up front with what our hiring process looks like so people know what to expect. Please see below the typical steps in our recruitment process.
Once the advertisement has been taken down, a shortlist of candidates will be selected by the hiring committee to proceed to the next steps. Only those selected for interview will be contacted.
Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed via Zoom by a panel of IWGB elected officials and/or staff. Candidates will be interviewed by the same panel to ensure consistency. Please make us aware in advance of any reasonable adjustments you may require to engage as fully as possible in the interview process.
Following these interviews, it is possible that there will be a second stage of interviews.
The hiring committee will convene with the goal of selecting and making an offer to one of the candidates.
