Palestine Solidarity Statement

We, as General Secretary and President of the IWGB (Independent Workers Union of Great Britain), send our solidarity to workers taking part in the Palestinian General Strike.

As trade unionists, we believe that international solidarity is a key part of our movement. The IWGB has a proud history of standing on the side of the exploited and oppressed. Over the past 73 years Palestinians have faced ethnic cleansing, occupation, and now live under a system of Israeli Apartheid. More recently, we have seen the forced evictions in Sheikh Jarrah, the attacks on the al-Aqsa Mosque, and the brutal bombing of Gaza. We stand with the Palestinian people in their struggle for freedom, justice, and equality.

We call on the UK government to demand an immediate end to Israel’s military action and illegal occupation. As Italian dockworkers have shown by refusing to load arms bound for Israel, material support for Israel can be undermined by worker action.

In the IWGB, we will now debate what we can do to support the Palestinian struggle. We know that the UK government, companies, and many employers profit from and support Israel’s actions. We will be discussing how Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) can be applied in our workplaces, sectors, and communities.

We call on others across the labour movement to take a stand, show solidarity, and join the National Demonstration for Palestine in London on Saturday 22nd of May.

Nosotros, como Secretario General y Presidente del Sindicato IWGB (Independent Workers Union of Great Britain), enviamos nuestra solidaridad a lxs trabajadorxs que participan en la Huelga General Palestina.

Como sindicalistas, creemos que la solidaridad internacional es una parte clave de nuestro movimiento. El Sindicato IWGB tiene una orgullosa historia de estar del lado de lxs explotadxs y oprimidxs. Durante los últimos 73 años, lxs palestinxs se han enfrentado a la limpieza étnica, la ocupación y ahora viven bajo un sistema de apartheid israelí. Más recientemente, hemos sido testigos de los desalojos forzosos de Sheikh Jarrah, los ataques a la mezquita de Al Aqsa y el brutal bombardeo de Gaza. Estamos con el pueblo palestino en su lucha por la libertad, la justicia y la igualdad.

Pedimos al gobierno británico que exija el fin inmediato de la acción militar y la ocupación ilegal de Israel. Como han demostrado los estibadores italianos al negarse a cargar armas con destino a Israel, el apoyo material a Israel puede verse socavado por la acción de lxs trabajadorxs.

En el Sindicato IWGB debatiremos ahora qué podemos hacer para apoyar la lucha palestina. Sabemos que el gobierno del Reino Unido, las empresas y muchos empleadores se benefician de las acciones de Israel y las apoyan. Debatiremos cómo se puede aplicar el Boicot, Desinversión y Sanciones (BDS) en nuestros lugares de trabajo, sectores y comunidades.

Hacemos un llamamiento al movimiento obrero para que adopte una postura, muestre su solidaridad y se una a la Manifestación Nacional por Palestina que tendrá lugar en Londres el sábado 22 de mayo.
