Colombia Solidarity Statement

Colombia is on a trail of death; for too long, no generation has lived to know peace. At the beginning of May 2021, Colombians came out to protest an unfair tax reform presented by President Iván Duque and were met with state violence.

The Colombian constitution frames a welfare state, stating that the state must protect the property, honour and life of its citizens. It does not say that it should only protect citizens who have friends in high places, or the richest and most affluent, or those who call themselves "good citizens" and who nevertheless have rifles in their homes.

This constitution says that the state must protect "all citizens", regardless of gender, sex, religion, culture, skin colour and other characterizations. When, on the contrary, the state kills defenseless citizens and children, as has happened on this occasion, this is called “state terrorism” and it constitutes a crime against humanity that must be tried by international courts of justice. The Colombian government has incurred an absolute ethical bankruptcy of the state, which is being carried out by the president of the country, the congress of the republic and the public forces.

Citizens have stopped trusting an institution like the police, who has lost their legitimacy by violating the law. The duty of the police is not to obey the president of the government, but to serve the State Constitution. The Colombian Constitution prohibits police from shooting peaceful protesters. With these events, they have gone from being public officials to being murderers; they have committed the worst crimes in all of America. A protest must not be turned into an act of war.

Protest is a fundamental and universal right. At the IWGB, we have been taking a stand with many other organizations as part of the #KillTheBill movement and fighting against legislation that gives UK police even more powers to break up protests and intimidate the working class.

As a union made up of precarious workers, and many migrants from Latin America, including Colombia, we express my complete solidarity to the Colombian people. Working class struggles are united, whether it's against injustice in the workplace, violence on the streets, or in efforts to scare or intimidate us. A people united will never be defeated.

Colombia es un reguero de muerte, desde hace tanto tiempo no se conoce generación que haya vivido en paz. A principios de mayo de 2021 lxs ciudadanxs salieron a protestar contra una reforma tributaria injusta presentada por el presidente Iván Duque.

La constitución colombiana está enmarcada en un Estado social de derecho, dice que el estado debe proteger los bienes, la honra y la vida de los ciudadanos y las ciudadanas. No dice que sólo debe proteger a lxs ciudadanxs amigxs de “fulanx”, o a lxs más ricxs y pudientes, o a lxs que se autodenominan “ciudadanxs de bien” y que sin embargo tienen fusiles en sus casas.

Dice que debe proteger a “todxs lxs ciudadanxs” y todxs, son todxs independiente de géneros, sexo, religión, cultura, color de piel y demás caracterizaciones que se puedan hacer. Cuando por el contrario, el estado mata a ciudadanxs y niñxs indefensxs como ha ocurrido en esta ocasión, a eso se le llama “terrorismo de Estado” y constituye un crimen de lesa humanidad que debe ser juzgado por los tribunales de justicia internacional. El gobierno Colombiano ha incurrido en una quiebra ética absoluta del estado, y está llevada a cabo por el presidente del país, el congreso de la república y la fuerza pública.

La ciudadanía ha dejado de confiar en una institución como la policía, porque esta ha perdido su legitimidad al vulnerar las leyes. El deber de la policía no sólo es obedecer al presidente de gobierno si no sobre todo, a la Constitución del Estado. La Constitución colombiana les prohíbe disparar a manifestantes pacíficos. Con estos hechos han pasado de ser funcionarios públicos a ser asesinos, han cometido los peores crímenes de toda América. No se debe convertir una protesta en un acto de guerra.

La manifestación, la protesta en un país democrático, es un derecho fundamental y universal. En IWGB, hemos estado protestando con muchas organizaciones para #KillTheBill y para luchar contra la legislación que otorga a la policía en el Reino Unido aún más poderes para disolver las protestas e intimidar a los trabajadores.

Como un sindicato formado por trabajadorxs precarixs, y muchxs migrantes de América Latina, envío mi solidaridad al pueblo Colombiano. Las luchas de los trabajadores están unidas, ya sea contra la injusticia en el lugar de trabajo, la violencia en las calles o los esfuerzos por asustarnos. El pueblo unido jamás será vencido.
