Head of HR and Compliance

The IWGB is excited to be hiring a Head of HR and Compliance. The Independent Workers’ Union of Great Britain (IWGB) is a new and dynamic union which consists of mainly low paid, migrant and/or precarious workers, such as outsourced cleaners and security guards, workers in the so-called “gig economy”, such as cycling instructors and Uber drivers, and foster care workers. We are looking for a candidate that can support the union to expand even further.

The role is based in our London office (when it reopens) and is initially for 21 hours a week with the potential to increase in the future as needed and able. During the COVID-19 lockdown, and for as long as it is unsafe to return to the office, this job will be fully remote.

Duties will include:

  • Working with the HR subcommittee to implement policies and procedures
  • Manage employees’ and members’ complaints, disciplinaries and grievances
  • Manage compliance of the union, primarily with Health and Safety legislation
  • Administer payroll and payroll records
  • Coordinate recruitment of new employees

There is no requirement to have a formal qualification in HR. Relevant job experience is highly valued.

Everyone working for the IWGB gets paid London Living Wage plus £3, (which currently totals to £13.75 per hour) and an optional 6% employee paid and 13% employer paid pension. They also receive 30 holiday days + 8 bank holidays and 6 months sick pay prorated based on how many hours a week they work.

Who is the IWGB?

Founded in August of 2012, the IWGB now consists of 11 branches. The branches are highly autonomous and lead on campaigning for better pay and conditions. IWGB campaigns are known for being bold, vibrant, loud and effective. In addition to campaigning the IWGB’s Legal Department is also highly active, providing representation on a range of employment matters such as disciplinary processes, grievances, private hire licensing, and employment tribunals. The IWGB organises social events for members, Spanish and English classes, and holds regular meetings where members can engage and feed into policy. We are a democratic organisation with all officials being regularly elected.

The interview process

We like to be open and up front with what our hiring process looks like so people feel comfortable and understand what to expect. Here’s a short run down of the expected time frames and what the interviews will overall look like.

Review Candidates

Timeframe: 3 days

Once the job ad closes, a short list of candidates will be selected by the hiring committee to proceed to the next steps. All candidates will be notified on whether they’re proceeding to the next step or not.

Remote Interviews

Timeframe: 1 week

Each candidate that makes it to the remote interview step will have an interview via Zoom with a group of three employees and elected officials. This group of 3 people will interview all candidates to ensure consistency.

Sync Up and Offer Stage

Timeframe: 1 week

The hiring committee will write down their thoughts on each candidate and then convene with the goal of making an offer to one of the candidates.
